In 1983, Alice Walker introduced the world to the term “womanist”. In her book “In Search of Our Mother’s Gardens: Womanist Prose”, she coins the phrase “acting womanish”. Walker characterized a womanist as “audacious, courageous, or willful”, helping pioneer an inclusive movement for black feminists and feminists of color.”

Our project Sisters, is a depiction of black women from an array of backgrounds. Who’s stories highlight those very ideals Walker characterized. We took a look at the EveryDai™️ woman, setting our shoot in 1950s Harlem, New York. An era where black womens voices were beginning to prevail. It was imperative that we create imagery that is inclusive beyond The Civil Rights Movement. We also showcased natural hair and modern details to represent nonconformity, freedom, and individuality.
